Brief
History
This
fiesta is in honour
of La Virgen del Sufragio and
San Jaime (St. James)
who are the Patron Saints of Benidorm.
All the cities, towns and villages in Spain have a local fiesta in
honour of their Patron Saints. San Jaime is also the Patron of
Spain. San Jaime the
apostol is known to have brought Christianity to Spain as he preached
here in 40 AD.
In
March 1740 news reached Benidorm that an abandoned
vessel was adrift beyond the bay.
Its masts had broken off and its deck was awash.
The sea was rough and an easterly
gale was driving the vessel down the coast. Some Benidorm fishermen, with
great difficulty, towed the ship to the beach.
After a dispute between the local authorities and the military
authorities, the ship was burned as a health hazard. They thought that all the crew must have been killed by the
plague which was prevalent at that time.
Everything went up in flames but the following morning when some
boys were searching through the ashes for nails they found a small wooden
statue of the Virgin which had been miraculously
preserved. The statue
was taken to the Church of
San Jaime where a chapel was later built for her.
The people of Benidorm have a great devotion to Maria del Sufragio.
This
part of Benidom´s history is re-enacted every November on Poniente Beach
by the Parque de Elche. This
year it is on Saturday the 8th at
17:00 hours.-
HAVE
A WONDERFUL FIESTA WITH US.
